Inside Claude

Every answer comes with its receipt.

Claude does the asking, reading and writing. Community Pulse gives it one approved data source to query — under your own sign-in, not the open internet and not its own memory.

  • The source and the period

Which dataset answered, and for which year or month.

  • The unit and the fine print

Filled jobs or dollars, a partial year, a matched place name — whatever changes how you'd read the number.

  • Nothing to quietly get wrong

Every figure is a structured query against a live extract. There is no free-text query path.

  • Presentation-ready, on request

Ask Claude to turn the same sourced figures into a Word report or PowerPoint deck — no manual copy-pasting from a dashboard.

Which industries employ the most people in the Waikato region? Show me a chart.
Manufacturing is the largest, with 24,800 filled jobs across the Waikato Region.

How it works

Ask a question, get a checkable answer.

No special syntax and nothing to configure — the careful part happens before you see a number.

1

Ask in plain English

A region, a district, an industry, a year — no official field names required.

2

Matched, not guessed

Your wording is resolved against values that exist in the data. An ambiguous match is flagged, never silently picked.

3

A structured query runs

The same validated request every time, against the live extract — never free text.

4

The answer, with context

The query that ran, the unit, the period, and any caveat you'd need before it goes in a report.

Maps & GIS

Down to the suburb, on a real map.

Ask for a map and Claude draws one — real boundaries, shaded with figures straight from your data. No GIS software, no shapefiles. Where the data reaches suburb scale (SA2), so does the map.

  • Region → district → suburb

Boundaries for every region, territorial authority and SA2 — about 2,400 suburb-scale areas nationwide — so one question can zoom from the whole district into its neighbourhoods.

  • Hover, tap, compare

Every area answers back with its name and value. A legend and a ranked list sit beside the map, with the same figures.

  • Honest about coverage

Where the data reaches suburb level, so does the map. Where it doesn’t, Claude says so rather than inventing figures.

The data

Drawn from 250+ datasets, across 12 national themes.

Each dataset is checked against this connector's grounding and caveat rules before it goes live, and more join over time. Need something that isn't here yet? Tell us what you're after.

Population & Demographics Economy & National Accounts Labour Market & Business Income, Living Standards & Equity Housing & Built Environment Health & Wellbeing Education & Skills Transport & Infrastructure Environment, Climate & Energy Society & Communities Tourism & International Travel Governance, Elections & Public Sector

Free comes with a starter set of datasets across the themes above, no card needed. Standard unlocks every one of the 250+, with no monthly reset. In Claude, ask “What can I ask?” to see exactly what's on your plan right now.

What Can I Ask

New to this? A guided tour of what the data covers — and what it plainly doesn't.

Trust & security

It never guesses. It says so instead.

Every question is checked against values that exist in your data and validated before it runs — then checked again, so a hidden regional total or a filter that didn't apply is caught before you see it.

Read-only, always

There is no write path back to Tableau — not behind a flag, not for an administrator.

Signed in as you

Everyone on your team signs up with their own account — never a shared password.

"I don't know" beats a guess

A result that can't be confirmed against your data is withheld, not handed over with small print.

Every figure is traceable

The query that ran, the unit, the place and the period — so a number you quote in public can be checked.

Minimal by design

Sign-up asks only for what an account needs. No tracking or advertising cookies on this connector.

Your questions stay yours

We log which tool ran and which dataset it touched — never the words of your question or Claude's answer.

The data behind every answer is published New Zealand regional statistics — aggregate figures, not personal information about identifiable people. Account information is handled the way the Privacy Act 2020 expects. Full detail in the privacy policy.

For your IT team: seven purpose-built tools, all read-only. Only one of them ever returns a number, and there is no free-text query tool at all. See the documentation.

Book a walkthrough
Does this replace our existing BI or GIS tools?
No. Community Pulse is a plain-English front door onto published datasets — not a replacement for your dashboards, GIS layers or wider BI stack. For deep exploration or mapping work, your existing tools stay the right tool.
What happens when the data can't answer a question?
It says so, plainly, instead of estimating. A period outside the data's coverage, a rate the data can't support, or a place name it can't resolve uniquely all come back as a stated refusal with the reason — never a real-looking number that happens to be wrong.
What does it have access to, and who can reach it?
Read-only Tableau extracts for the datasets listed on this page — nothing else in your environment. Access sits behind individual sign-in, so it's clear who did what.
Does it ever write, edit or delete anything?
No. There is no write path back to Tableau or any other system — not behind a setting, not for an administrator.
Are our questions used to train anything?
No. We don't log the content of your questions or Claude's answers — only which tool ran, which dataset it touched, and whether it succeeded. See the privacy policy.
What does it cost?
The Free plan costs nothing and needs no card: 50 tool calls every 30 days on 10 datasets. Standard is $250 NZD / month and gives unlimited tool calls on every dataset. You can upgrade from your account at any time.
Does every team member need their own login?
Yes, by design. Each person signs up individually, so every query is attributable to a real account rather than a password passed around the office.

Get started

Add the connector in about a minute.

Nothing to install and no IT ticket — one link, one sign-in, and every question after that is answered from real data.

Watch how to connectAdding the connector and asking a first question, start to finish.

Paste it exactly as shown — nothing before or after /mcp. An extra slash is the usual reason a connector won't add.

Prefer to read it through first?

The full guide covers the same five steps in more detail, plus what to do when something doesn't work.

  1. Open Claude's connector settings

In Claude, go to Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.

Settings › Connectors › Add custom connector
  2. Paste the link and name it

“Community Pulse” is fine. Leave every OAuth field — Client ID and Client Secret — blank: Claude registers the connection itself, so there's nothing correct to put in them.

  3. Turn it on for your chat

Some clients enable a new connector automatically; others need it switched on from the + menu inside the conversation. Check there first if a question doesn't seem to reach it.

  4. Sign in with your own account

The first question sends you to this site's sign-in page, separate from your Claude account. Everyone on your team gets their own — new accounts start on the Free plan, no card required.

  5. Ask a real question

Try one from Try one of these, or ask about your own district. A working answer names the dataset and period it came from.
